I thought it was a funny fight movie. A simple yet entertaining story with of course some drama. The cast isn't doing too bad either, especially for a film like this. A nice role by Eckhart as a crazy fighter. A pass from me.

Former cage fighter Jack Boucher [Aaron Eckhart] manages to win the money he owes to Big Momma Sweet [Marianne Jean-Baptiste] in a casino, but he loses it when he is robbed by Ricky Joe [Mike McColl]. That's why Big Momma Sweet forces him to participate in a cage fight, even though Jack has taken so many blows in his career that his memory is already affected and he wouldn't survive such a fight. Set in Mississippi, so prepare for caricatured characters, questionable accents and an occasionally laughably melodramatic performance from Eckhart. At the cringe-worthy denouement you will probably (also) shout for your mother.

Raw and Realistic Action Work in a Surprising Leading Role

In the world of action and fight movies, it is usually familiar faces like Van Damme who we see popping up in intense fight scenes. However, in this production we get a surprising appearance: Aaron Eckhart, an actor who is normally more associated with dramatic roles, or with a gun in his hand than with pure fist fights. This time he shows his versatility and dives into a role that demands everything from him both physically and emotionally.

Although the film starts off slowly, this does not prove to be a weakness, but rather a way to give the characters depth. Space is left for the development of the story and the relationships between the characters, which makes the climax extra powerful. Eckhart knows how to convince the viewer with his raw and realistic performance. The final battle, in particular, stands out because of its physical intensity and unpolished character; it is a refreshing break from the usual, over-stylized Hollywood fights.

I don't really understand why the film has had mixed reactions. Perhaps some viewers miss the action heroes of the past or expected more spectacle, but for those who can be carried away by a quietly constructed story and a rock-solid climax, this film is definitely worth seeing. I hope that the appreciation for this film will grow over the years, it deserves it and that Eckhart will take on a role like this more often - something I will certainly applaud.

In short: a wonderful film for fans of intense fight scenes with an actor who makes a surprising attempt at the action genre.
