In itself this is a nice conclusion to the films I have seen about the regime of General Videla (Argentina 1876-1981), also known as the “Dirty War”. It is a fascinating drama about the trial against Videla and his criminal cronies. Still, the film leaves you with an unsatisfactory feeling, but that is mainly due to the far too mild punishments that bear no relation to the atrocities for which Videla cs were responsible.

Cinematically, none of this makes much sense. Solidly made with a slightly different style here and there that stands out (think the interview scene). Then there are some dramatic bits to indicate the pressure one works under, but that too is never really made palpable. More like those excuse pieces that you often see in such films. It's not all original, far from it. But the film is made with craftsmanship. This thing lasts almost 2.5 hours and looks great and never gets boring. Perhaps partly because of the rather light tone of the film. Also well acted (within the framework of a somewhat simple script), clearly told and a fascinating piece of history (this is a film that stands or falls with the interest in the subject). 3.5*.

In December 1983, after 7 years, the Argentine dictatorship under the leadership of General Videla [Marcelo Pozzi] came to an end. The new government of President Alfonsin decides to bring Videla and a number of other prominent figures from the dictatorship to justice and appoints Julio Strassera [Ricard Darin] as prosecutor. He initially does not like it at all, also because he immediately understands that the current government does not feel called upon to give him all the support. Moreover, Julio's colleagues are not exactly eager to help him. But then Luis Ocampo [Peter Lanzani] appears, young and relatively inexperienced, but with a youthful enthusiasm that persuades a group of idealistic law students to prepare the case. The trial has been compared to the Nuremberg Trials and the acting is of a high standard, but it is too conventional in design and structure to compete with Judgment at Nuremberg. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
