I largely agree with joolstein.

Quite entertaining psychological thriller and partly due to the voodoo / the occult, also has a horror touch. Because as the title implies, it's not about healing at all, which Diane brings, but about revenge. And how the film evolved, I certainly liked it and it ended up being better than expected. A 6 to 6.5/10.

From director Lorcan Finnegan and writer Garret Shanley I saw Without Name (2016) and Vivarium (2019). In both films, the characters face unpleasant and nightmarish situations. Eva Green doesn't fare much better in Nocebo. The duo throws the viewer into a surreal world in which it is difficult to determine where reality is overtaken by fantasy.

In the first place, the film depicts the confrontation between two women. Eva Green is Christine. A woman who finds herself in an unpleasant situation. A woman who is career oriented. A woman with a cool appearance who has her affairs under control. A woman who loses control more and more in the course of the film due to the strange events that happen to her. Eva Green plays her with a beautiful mixture of ruthlessness and sardonic irony.

The other woman is played by Chai Fonacier. She is Diana, the spontaneously appearing help in the household. She is the intruder who positions herself in the house of Christine's family and who you are not sure whether she is a villain or a noble heroine. Looking back from Diana to her Philippine homeland, it gradually becomes clear who she is and why she is there. This happens in dribs and drabs and does not immediately reveal her character, but first of all creates even more exciting doubts.

The theme of social inequality is touched upon without going too far. As a special aspect in the story, it functions well. Grotesque special effects, mysterious events and excellent acting continue to predominate. The symbiosis of all these elements is sophisticated, atmospheric and exciting. Jose Buencamino's music adds another degree of tension and guides the viewer to a satisfying and brutal ending. Yes, Nocebo is a fine horror movie.

The idea itself is not very original, but it is good - it is the execution that I do not really like. The monkey comes out just a little too quickly, the mystery evaporates too quickly and the tension is gone before all the details are worked out. But that's not really interesting anymore, and the actual denouement feels like mustard after the meal. If it had all remained in the dark a little longer, and if the alienation of the leading role had been played a little more, I think a much better film could have been released.

Green does act very well, and with her expressive face she also has exactly the right tools to make it tangible how bad she feels about herself. That makes up for a lot.

But all in all, it's not enough. You expect more from those names, and the film just doesn't manage to deliver that.
