Author Claire Rivers struggles with writer's block. She enrolls in a retreat run entirely by an artificial intelligence to solve her problem. However, when an unforeseen software bug occurs, Claire finds herself trapped in her abode with a malfunctioning android, a degenerating host, and no communication with the outside world. As time runs out and food supplies run out, the android becomes increasingly unstable. Claire must overcome her fears and find a way to outwit technology so she can make it out of the refuge alive.

On the advice of her agent [Tamsin Jeffrey], author Claire Rivers [Rachel Shelley] heads to The Retreat for 30 days in the hopes that she will find the inspiration and focus for a new novel. Seclusion should be the name of the game, but Claire is harassed from the start by a digital concierge [Wayne Brady] and is also saddled with AIRobot Rita [Heida Reed] who constantly pesters Claire with unnecessary questions and unsolicited comments. A reasonable person would have kicked Rita out or left immediately (although of course she could have gotten more information about The Retreat), but Claire accepts the situation. But a glitch in the network leaves Claire locked in her apartment with a robot who becomes increasingly unhelpful and eventually downright hostile. An implausible plot in which Kennedy fails to make clear enough what the connection is between the events in 'The Retreat' and those in the book with a young girl [Annie Cusselle] and her dominant, manipulative mother [Rebecca-Clare Evans]. Reed deserves praise for her controlled acting, but it does not become very compelling.
