On the brink of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the nineteen-year-old peasant girl Jagna is forced to marry the elderly and wealthy peasant Maciej Boryna. She herself loves his son Antek. In time, the villagers in Jagna see the epitome of their hatred and jealousy and Jagna must fight to maintain her independence.

Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1924. This is a film adaptation of his most famous work, which he wrote in four parts from 1904 to 1909. A hopelessly dated and downright banal melodrama (and a rip-off of Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Scarlet Letter') about Jagna [Kamila Urzedowska], the daughter of a discredited mother [Ewa Kasprzyk] who lost all her possessions. Although she is in love with the very strong, jealous Antek [Robert Gulaczyk], she marries his father Maciej [Miroslaw Baka]. That doesn't stop Jagna from starting an affair with Antek, which leads to extremely predictable chaos, especially when the gossip aunts get involved. Cringing morality drama from the makers of Loving Vincent and made with the same animation technique. In Loving Vincent that choice was effective and justified, here it is just a gimmick that keeps the viewer at a distance.
