In the summer sun of a dream vacation by the lake, two teenagers explore their budding sexuality. The environment is breathtaking and fairytale-like, and yet dark feelings are increasingly gaining the upper hand. Is the story that a body was found along the shore of Falcon Lake true? Expect an evocative coming-of-age drama in the vein of A Ghost Story.

High marks (this site, NRC) so in the end I quickly grabbed this film last night, although it was not on my mind at first. Well, I didn't see those high marks in it, but this is a great film. Partly coming-of-age and summery, but with a pretty dark filter, spooky music, an oppressive aspect ratio of 1.33:1 shot on 16mm and those locations that make the film feel like horror. That is well done and partly works. That unsettling feeling is there all the time. Otherwise well acted, especially by that boy; his looks are always very significant and you see a lot going on in his head.

On the other hand, towards the end the film seems to become a bit rudderless and going nowhere and it made me a bit impatient. Furthermore, the film does not really excel anywhere. What happens here for 90% has been done many times before and better. That last 10%, the ending, the twist, you don't often see in such films, but it's not very original either*. Not that I necessarily saw this coming, but I wasn't blown away either. 3.5*.

*At least, I'm not quite sure yet whether Bastien dies at the end or died a while ago, several years before in that lake. There is something to be said for both, neither can. Anyone have a good idea? Perhaps it is precisely this confusion that makes the impact somewhat less.

A young teenager - still green behind his ears - meets a girl during a vacation on the shores of a remote lake. With teasing behavior she manages to challenge him sexually again and again, which increases his adolescent insecurity. A beautiful coming-of-age drama about budding sexuality with an excellent leading role by Joseph Engel. Excellent directorial debut by Canadian actress Charlotte Le Bron.
