As indicated, a great film that will reverberate for a long time. Made in Pakistan, the film is about gender roles in a small community in Pakistan itself and the conflict between conservative and modern views. The story unfolds very gradually and, in fact, begins as a kind of farce, with banal and stereotyped jokes that made me a bit skeptical at first.

However, this turns out to be only the prelude to developments that are not only well built up into a heavy drama, but are also presented beautifully and nuanced: from the transgender woman who is by no means above all judgment (the way in which she eventually is unjust to say the least),, to the man in an arranged marriage who struggles with his own sexuality, and his wife who is forced to be hidden by the socio-cultural context becomes increasingly desperate and eventually driven to suicide.

Joyland starts very light but gets heavier and heavier, and at the end really none of the characters is happy. It offers a realistic but downright sad picture of reality and has a great impact. It wasn't until the credits that I saw that Malala Yousafzai was involved in the film as an executive producer. A lot falls into place with this, and my appreciation has only increased for the film that does not lazily complain about the narrow-mindedness of 'conservatives' in an old-fashioned society, but shows a refined portrait of the concrete struggle between tradition and modernity.

It's January 20th today, and so far this is the movie of the year for me!

To meet the financial demands of his traditional Pakistani family, Haider [Ali Junejo] accepts a job as a Bollywood dancer in a burlesque. His family thinks he works at a "respectable facility" and Haider does everything he can to keep it that way. That becomes even more difficult when he falls under the spell of Biba [Alina Khan], the main dancer in the company who is also transgender. Creates an atmospheric image of both a stifling traditional household and the nightlife in Pakistan and is well acted by both protagonists. Peerzada also impresses as the troubled, ailing father, even if there are a few too many subplots that distract from the central plot.

The film is about people who don't fit the stereotypes and/or what is expected of you as a man or woman in a conservative, patriarchal honor culture and thus about how suffocating the imposed male and female roles are for some who are different. This is already a very exhausted theme and I have not found anything in the film that is a valuable addition to it. No matter how special, for example, a transgender person is, neither the theme nor the execution of this film can be called special.
