American Carnage plot

"No one escapes the daily grind."

A governor issues a decree to arrest the children of undocumented immigrants. The newly arrested juveniles are subsequently given the opportunity to withdraw their charges by volunteering with aged care. Once at the nursing home, the volunteers discover that the governor and the facility's overseer have concocted a horribly depraved conspiracy that endangers young and old alike.

Ah.

The concept and underlying idea of American Carnage is definitely fun. Also quite terrifying when you think about it a little further, but this film seems to want to imply little in that direction. The ideas may be uncomfortable at times, but there is hardly any space to think about them.

In the end it is all still fresh and fruity. The colors are very bright, the atmosphere quick. It also helps that the cast largely consists of names who nowadays also make a career among the young audience. Lendeborg Jr. has already been featured on Netflix and Ortega has recently been featured more and more often on the big screen. Certainly the second one is well on its way to a great career.

This movie just doesn't help with that, especially because the security of the whole thing works against it quite a bit. In addition, the film does not exactly sparkle. There's one big idea and we're slowly working towards it, but if the film really wants to add something cool to it, it's only half done each time. Always only a single scene or always pushed too far into the background. Take that death dance of the old man for example. Much more needs to be done with it.

There is hardly any tension or gore, but the concept is lurid enough to make this possible. It is therefore not clear to me why the choice is made for a course that has been put together as safely as possible. It doesn't help the tempo, but after a while the attempts at good editing or editing are thrown out the window anyway. It certainly has its fine points, such as the cinematography here and there and the acting, but it still feels completely unfinished. A feeling that lasts quite disturbingly for the rest of the film, unfortunately. There is simply too little threat. Always a pity.
