Adam [Tawfeek Barhom] is a young man from a humble fishing community who has the honor of training as an Imam at the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo. When the Sheikh of Al-Azhar, the spiritual leader of all Sunnis in the country, suddenly dies, Colonel Ibrahim [Fares Fares] and Soliman [Sherwan Haji] are ordered to use every means to ensure the election of the new Sheikh. influence that pro-presidential Sheikh Omar Beblawi [Jawad Altawil] emerges as the winner. They come up with a ruse to sideline favorite Sheikh Negm [Makram Khoury] and decide to use Adam as a spy through manipulation and blackmail to eliminate any other candidates. Exciting thriller with a subtly terrifying Fares knows how to use religion and the accompanying rituals in a fascinating way to keep the drama and tension high. Perhaps a nice double-bill with The Two Popes.

- What doctrine of Islam does Sheikh Negm follow?

- That of the truth.

- What truth?

- Sheikh Negm's.

Short dialogue that approaches the theme of the film nicely. What begins as a simple story of a fisherman's son who is accepted at Al-Azhar University in Cairo slowly develops into a web of intrigue, in which knowledge of the Qur'an, recitation of the verses, and debating skills are important ammunition for the succession. of the dead great imam (comparable to the pope with the Catholics).

Fascinating insight into the Islamic world where the border between religion and politics is wafer-thin, and which resembles the corrupt world of Western religions in every way.

Filmed fairly straight forward. 'This is the story and I will tell it as clearly as possible,' director Tarik Saleh seems to have thought. He succeeded.

The film looks good and is not bad either, but in the end it does not deliver enough: the crucial plot twists are unbelievable ( why would the Muslim brother give up his place to Adam without clicking, why is Adam's life spared in the end, etc. ) and follow Hollywood clichés too much. While the plot requires you to keep your attention, the script just isn't clever enough for the spy thriller that the film essentially is, even though it has an unusual setting at Cairo's Islamic University where state security deploys spies to can determine who will be the religious authority in the country. The theme of the delicate balance or field of tension between church and state, which should not come into conflict, is interesting, but is hardly explored: occasionally something profound - philosophical or theological - is said, but I did not get the impression that the film continues there. does something with it.
