Although this western is dedicated to genre specialist Budd Boetticher (The Cimarron Kid, The Man from the Alamo, The Tall T), despite key roles for Dafoe and Waltz, this has become a rather dull, routine film. Bounty hunter Max Borlund [Christoph Waltz] is hired by Martin Kidd [Hamish Linklater] to rescue his wife Rachel [Rachel Brosnahan] from Elijah Jones [Brandon Scott], a deserter who allegedly kidnapped her and fled to Mexico. There, Max has to deal with corrupt police, with landowner Tiberio Vargas [Benjamin Bratt] and with Joe Cribbens [Willem Dafoe], a sniper who was nabbed by Max five years ago and has just served his prison term. The plot would have been right up Boetticher's hand and would certainly have produced a more entertaining end result.

Pretty average western. The story is not very complicated. The effect is simple but solid. The film has few surprises and Hill walks the familiar paths, but does so skillfully. The whole atmosphere is good, including appropriate soundtrack. Drama and actions alternate in time so that the film never gets boring. The acting is fine and the chemistry between the main characters is good. Simple but nothing special. 3.0

Western starring Christoph Waltz and Willem Dafoe.

There appears to be divergent interests of various people, with as

most interesting that of professional gambler Dafoe with a bone to pick

at bounty hunter Waltz. Both are followed alternately with two in the end

confrontations, the last of which at the end of the film.

So the director Walter Hill actually does it with two storylines that ultimately

inevitably come together. Along the way at a fairly slow pace but the

attention regularly stimulated by certain scenes including the 'whip duel', and

the roles are also well performed, although I found both Dafoe and Waltz less so

convincing than I had hoped.

I couldn't see a real cowboy, especially in Dafoe, although he had one

again that appearance as usual from him.

At the end, the film is still quite loose, which is certainly not weaned from it

some brutality and hardness at times.

A solid western from the old hand Hill that in itself comes across as quite average, but

nevertheless has enough to offer for the western enthusiast.

What struck me, by the way, was almost always a rather faded, faded lighting

I was not so happy then. On purpose? Then the target with it is me

completely missed.
