Just been. The film seems to be meant to be funny with a serious message. But I didn't find it funny at all. Wouldn't recommend it, I've done my time in the cinema.

Most wacky, unexpected post I'll type on the site this year, but Barbieis the best movie of the year, so far (possibly only until tomorrow, even).

In Mattel's answer to The Lego Movie, the carefree fairytale life of stereotypical Barbie [Margot Robbie] in Barbieland is disrupted by a single existential thought. Barbie seeks help from Weird Barbie [Kate McKinnon]. He concludes that this thought has to do with her user and advises Barbie to travel to 'The Real World' and find her owner [Ariana Greenblatt] to solve that. Along the way, stereotypical Ken [Ryan Gosling] turns out to have been secretly hiding in Barbie's car. What Barbie and Ken find in "the real world" is not what they expected. Robbie plays the title role with a clever mix of humanity and irony, which amuses and moves her as much as she does. Gosling does what he can, but with his sometimes mannered playing and poor comic timing, he falls short. The screenplay is a mix of successful and less successful ideas and there are too many, making the story messy and threatening to derail the film several times. Amusing, but Michael Cara's underused one-liner about NSYNC made me laugh out loud.
