My expectations of films produced by Netflix are already so low that it can only be better than expected. And that's what happens with this movie!

The Weekend Away really has all appearances against it. It is clearly a Croatian production with a small budget and mainly Croatian actors. Some people from the US and England have been recruited for the poster.

I can't put my finger on it exactly and don't know if it's due to aspect ratio or use of color, but it's not portrayed very Hollywood either. That, combined with an opening that wouldn't look out of place in a porn movie, doesn't bode well. I mean: two slender ladies in a faraway place, a luxurious apartment with lots of champagne, who want to go out for a while. You will certainly find an opening like this dozens of times on Pornhub. I heard from a friend.

But we didn't really care: had a busy week, kids in bed, didn't even feel like a drink, but just watched a mind-to-zero Netflix movie with a cup of tea.

It was therefore an extremely positive surprise that a very nice mystery story unfolds with several good twists and a protagonist (Leighton Meester) who can hold her own very well. This movie is the most positive surprise in ages!

A thirteen in a dozen movie. A missing girlfriend on a weekend out feels pretty worn out. The main character has to do his own detective work, because the authorities don't cooperate, seems to end up in a Kafkaesque state and at the end we get a lame twist. Formula work. So it feels very comfortable. The environment is beautiful, which compensates somewhat. 1.5*.

Seen two films in quick succession: Secrets in the Building (2022) and this one. Both are thrillers and both have an unknown cast that had poor to mediocre acting. Still, I liked this one better, mainly because of the plot. With this film, this was a lot more interesting; was put together better. It wasn't really exciting but it was more fascinating and therefore looked a bit nicer. Just a nice snack.
