Andrea Riseborough excels in this bleak character study of a woman with an uncontrollable alcohol addiction. The film gets better and better and starts to get under your skin about half way through. It earns Riseborough a now controversial Oscar nomination for best female lead. Looking at the competition (Cate Blanchett, Anna de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh) she can win from me, also because this is the best film of the nominees for best female lead.

Good performance by Andrea Riseborough, who convincingly portrays an alcoholic woman whose life is derailed after winning a lottery.

Beautifully told, without too much fuss. Here and there some clichéd things (confrontations with fellow villagers (up to an assault), the white knight savior who still sees something good/beautiful in her) but nevertheless a strong portrait of a woman whose decisions for caused a lot of personal problems.

Still, I didn't find everything equally strong. Going cold turkey, for example, is a bit too easy for her. The moment that she seems to realize that her mentality really needs to change was also a bit too sudden for me, especially given her years of alcohol abuse. In the end it does come to a nice redemption arc, with an emotional but a bit too fairytale-like happy ending.

Oscar nomination well deserved, despite some controversy it seems.

4*
