Painted Boats plot
The Smith and Stoner families live on freighters on the British canals. The Smiths' ship is still being pulled by a horse, while the Stoners have already switched to a motorized boat. Mary Smith and Ted Stoner are in a relationship. At the start of World War II, Ted enlists in the military, unaware that Mary is pregnant.
