The film starts off very nicely with fragments from 37°2 le Matin (1986), but after that it goes quickly downhill. When I think of Joey King, I automatically think of her light-hearted “Kissing Booth” films. Although there are no top ones, I like these fry comedies better than this laborious little thing.

I had hoped for more of this.

It's not King and Allen's fault, because they do a great job in the film. The story is interesting enough to captivate and the touch of the supernatural ensures that The In Between deviates from the standard stuff in this genre.

I especially had trouble with how the film was put together. The flashback structure works against the film enormously, causing the film to lack any form of tension and sadness. I never understand why one has to play with the chronology of a film, especially when it adds nothing. Because you know what's happening from the start, all the flashbacks don't really matter. The element of surprise disappears and the shock is not there at all. It doesn't help that such a synopsis on MovieMeter also describes the entire film. If you do it, it must actually have a function in the film.

This is really a typical case of a film where you have to go into it blind and the film has to surprise you chronologically. Now the film spoils itself every time and if you even read a synopsis somewhere you don't have to watch the film.

2.5*

Perhaps it is time for Joey King to get involved in other productions, because there is a strong feeling that she has played these characters several times before. In that respect, the romance quickly feels unreal and manufactured, despite the (admittedly) professional acting. However, without tangible chemistry it makes little sense, especially if the paranormal impact barely takes shape in the end. The worn-out tragedy takes precedence over the more unique touches for almost 2 hours and makes for an unimpressive viewing experience, but the first fifteen minutes nevertheless raise some hope for something innovative. Director Arie Posin also seemed to have an ambitious project in mind, but focused too much on the structure and thus forgot to properly develop the final concept. The finale may have its own flair, but it comes too late. As a result, a film like The In Between is doomed to remain mediocre. I find it a bit lame to judge a film based on the appearance of the main character.
