With the Supreme Court's overruling of Roe v. Wade (1973) on abortion, the clock was turned back half a century last summer in America. This film goes back even further, to the turbulent 1960s when abortion was an illegal practice in gloomy backrooms. The film shows how the wife of a criminal lawyer is more or less forced to come into contact with this practice. From there she develops into one of the protagonists. An interesting film about a pregnant (excusez le mot) subject. The film seems to me primarily intended as a contribution to the fierce American discussion about abortion.

Joy Griffin [Elizabeth Banks] is pregnant when she is diagnosed with a heart condition. The doctor leaves no doubt: Joy will not survive childbirth. But it's 1968 and abortion is still illegal. Joy decides to save her own life and comes into contact with a circle of women led by Virginia [Sigourney Weaver] who connect desperate women with a 'surgeon' [Cory Michael Smith], who is willing to make illegal abortions against a to pay proper compensation. Joy decides to join the group and takes on an increasingly prominent role, frantically trying to keep it a secret from her husband [Chris Messina], a lawyer, and her daughter [Grace Edwards]. Banks impresses in the lead role and Nagy portrays the illegal abortion movement before Wade v Roe, but Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi's screenplay ignores the physical and mental toll of having an abortion. So it's just preaching to your own parish.

Nice movie with a great cast. And whether you are for or against abortion, you can't stop it anyway. If people want an abortion, they will always find a way, so you better make sure it can be done safely with real doctors. I thought it was an interesting (true?) story about women fighting for their rights to decide about their own bodies and lives. I also liked the 60s/70s vibe.
