The year is 1402. Margrete has achieved what no man has done before. She has united Denmark, Norway and Sweden in a peace alliance, which she rules on her own through her adopted young son Erik. Threatened by enemies, however, Margrete plans a marriage between Erik and an English princess. An alliance with England should secure the union's status as an emerging European power, but a crushing conspiracy is underway that could tear Margrete and everything she believes apart.

In 1397, Danish Queen Margaret I [Trine Dyrholm] united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in the Kalmar Union through a combination of armed struggle and diplomacy. Her only son, Olaf, died unexpectedly in 1387. Margaret became regent of Denmark and adopted her then six-year-old nephew, Erik, who was to be her heir to the throne. This fictional historical drama explores the still-unsolved mystery of a man [Jakob Oftebro] claiming to be Olaf and the unrest this caused Olaf's mother and adult nephew, Erik [Morten Hee Andersen], who fears he will lose his position as heir to the throne. Shakespearean scheming in a literal and figurative setting, with a magnificent performance by the inimitable Dyrholm and an equally strong supporting cast.
