Dog is exactly the kind of movie I need in these corona times.

After having some raunchy fun with Jackass Forever last week, it was now Channing Tatum's turn with a carefree road trip movie. In Dog, he and the dog Lulu have to bridge 2000 km to get to the funeral of Lulu's former owner, who is also Tatum's old comrade in arms. Both Tatum and the dog have suffered traumatic experiences fighting in Pakistan. In the film this causes a (at first sight) major mismatch between the two, but gradually they come closer to each other and Tatum learns from the people who come on his side how to deal with a (traumatized) dog.

Dog offers few surprises, proceeds as you would expect from start to finish and mainly focuses on the bond that Tatum and dog build. None of this is a problem at all, because sometimes you want a movie to put you in a nice cuddly comfort zone. Nothing is more beautiful than watching a film in which a sincere bond is built between humans and animals.

Does the film leave a permanent impression? No, but for me it will remain a film that I can put on on a depressing Sunday afternoon and swoon away about the bond between humans and animals.

3.5*

Good film in which an ex-soldier has to guide the dog of a deceased colleague. As befits a good road movie, plenty happens along the way. Some entertaining moments, but the emphasis here is just a bit more on drama. The interaction between Channing Tatum and the dog comes across as believable.

Tried this road movie once and was pleasantly surprised. The ending was not super surprising, but otherwise it was fine.

The cast also did well and came across as convinced. The longer playing time didn't bother either. Consider it recommended.
