On January 6, 2021, thousands of protesters gathered near the US Capitol in Washington to demonstrate against the formal determination of the election results that would take place there. The keynote speaker was none other than incumbent President Donald Trump, whose words justified to a group of zealots what they considered an act of patriotism: storming and occupying The Capitol. Roberts speaks with several members of The Proud Boys, a much-criticized group of fanatical Trump supporters, with freelance journalists who were among the first to break into the Capitol, with representatives of both parties, with support staff, not to mention some agents who had to try to defend the building under almost impossible circumstances, without causing a massacre. This poignant documentary makes clear how this could easily have gone horribly out of hand, using a wealth of impressive video footage that shows key moments from those four hours up close. Roberts does not intervene in the discussion, but especially the words of police officer Michael Fanone (who was seriously injured in the riots) make it clear how sharp the contrasts were - and still are.

It is quite intense how all those close-up shots can take you into the chaos and fear. The image of a bunch of irregulars - from hard-core fascists to conspiracy wappies - stirred up by malicious populists should, of course, set off alarm bells for other countries with similar movements. Not least the demonstrations of our own yoga geeks-Forumfascist alliance.

I had already seen many images on social media, but this documentary provides a better and more complete overview of the scale and events than ever before. The consequences for police officers, employees and members of Congress become clearly visible in interviews with those involved.

It is also very strange to see how that mob mentality unfolds before your eyes; some people call for calm, others incite it and although it is mainly groups of riled up hard cores (Proud Boys in tactical gear) who set the mood, there are many who trudge along quite passively (as spectators) with their phones in their hands. Not everyone was violent, and the officer who was dragged out was even given the opportunity to go back in (thanks but no thanks)...

Nevertheless, it is a black page in (recent) American history and downright ridiculous that there are still Republicans who deny the seriousness of this uprising.

Donald Trump is nothing less than a traitor because of his incitement and (lack of) actions at that time and it is therefore a shame that he could again become a presidential candidate for the 2024 elections... What a strange time we live in.

Well, the US was a shitshow then and unfortunately still is. I also have a gloomy outlook and hope that in the coming elections (again, but now for good) Trump and all his enablers (in both the US and here in Europe) will be dealt with.
