A Castle for Christmas plot

"Come home to where your dreams began."

When American author Sophie flies to Scotland during the festive season, she falls in love with a castle. She wants nothing more than to buy the place, but what she has not yet taken into account is that the castle has a very peculiar owner. The spiky Myles doesn't want to sell the noble house to a foreigner, causing the two to bump into each other. So it's up to Sophie to find a compromise.

The dark days before Christmas are approaching again. The temperature is dropping and there are more and more lights and pine trees everywhere. A beautiful and pleasant season in which a beautiful Christmas film can enhance the atmosphere.

Also this year the range of Christmas movies is huge again, but for me this one stood out first. Castles, Scotland, beautiful nature, a nice dog, decent actors and a scenario that fits the Christmas season.

With a mild look I can say that I really enjoyed this movie. The sets were beautiful. The Christmas atmosphere is constantly over and the story was endearing.

If I look at it with an objective critical eye, there is of course a lot to criticize, but if you are willing to be carried away in a beautiful Christmas story, this one is right for you.

I also give the high rating because there are many congeners who are much, much worse. In its kind, however, this film gives everything you can expect from it in a very nice way.

Very pleasant and very worthwhile in view of the Christmas days.

Now on Netflix.

Meh.

This is a cheap and lovelessly made production, with a story that is overflowing with cliches and fuss and where it was apparently forgotten to put a proper end to it - because that really doesn't seem like anything. Shields falls through the basket with a few really bad scenes, especially in the beginning, Elwes gets stuck in a huge fake Scottish accent. Actually, the dog Hamish is the only one who makes something of it.

By far the worst Christmas movie I've seen this year, but oh dear, it's not even December yet.

Most of the film was shot inside and outside the Dalmeny House. Home to the Earl and Countess of Rosebery, it was completed in 1817. Tours were held in June and July. In fact it is not a castle, but a revival mansion in South Queensferry on the outskirts of Edinburgh called Dalmeny House. Although Dun Dunbar Castle is only a fictional castle, a Dunbar Castle actually existed in Scotland. However, this is no longer in use. The film features cameos from Mark Fleischmann and Suanne Braun. Both were featured in The Princess Switch and subsequent sequels. In addition, Drew Barrymore plays himself. Actor Stephen Oswald is deaf in real life, and was able to learn his rules for the Christmas carol scene based on a technique. In preparation for her role, Brooke Shields bought a Scottish castle. A Scottish gardener then taught her how to care for the castle. Reportedly, Cary Elwes only accepted the role to pay off some gambling debts. For example, he was paid extra for every scene in which he had to kiss Brooke Shields' character.

A reasonable Christmas film with a predictable and heartwarming story. The kind of movies you have to watch at least once. The acting is nice, but otherwise it's anything but Oscar-worthy.

2.5 *
