Raven's Hollow plot
Poe and four other cadets are on a training mission in upstate New York. They make a horrifying discovery that takes them to a forgotten community. Poe thinks the town is hiding dark secrets and this catches his eye. Delving further into Raven's Hollow, Poe comes face to face with a truth that will haunt him forever.

This film tries so hard to create a certain atmosphere that it becomes annoying. Seen several movies with "Hollow" in the title so I knew what to expect. The director has followed the manual neatly. Everything is gray in autumn, the residents react grumpy and evasive, and monotonous music in the background that goes loud when it should be exciting. Unfortunately, it doesn't want to be really exciting.

The reviews are rightly not too good almost everywhere. It's an annoying boring poorly acted movie, which you could already know if you had read the plot carefully. Are also the totally wrong costumes I read..boring

Edgar Allen Poe is undoubtedly one of the greats among American writers regarding the crime and horror genre. His stories are still well read and are still the source of inspiration for filmmakers. In Raven's Hollow, director and writer Christopher Hatton places the young cadet Poe in a lurid murder mystery that will provide him with much fodder for his later writing.
Hatton does not sprinkle very subtly with references to Poe's work in the fictional story. The most ostentatious is of course the name Raven, which refers to the 1845 poem The Raven. Another example is the name Usher, as it is the name of an important character in the film. The dialogues are also interspersed with phrases from Poe's work. They don't do the movie any good. They sound awkward rather than uplifting.
The atmosphere of the film is wonderfully dark. Wonderfully gloomy. The barren landscape is always shrouded in mist and is dominated by gray colours. Simple but effective for creating the right atmosphere. It is a setting in which the slightest disturbing event has a chilling impact. Visually, the film is a pleasant spectacle.
The film has more to offer than just atmosphere. The body count is substantial and the kills are quite brutal, although much of the bloodlust takes place just out of camera range. That could have been a bit more explicit of me. The film also contains some creepy shots and some jumpscares. Both are quite ok.
And so Raven's Hollow is an interesting and entertaining movie but not a greatest movie. The story is just a bit too simple for that, the characters are just a bit too superficial and the dialogues sound just a bit too artificial.
