Drii Winter plot

Anna and Marco fall for each other in a mountain village and tie the knot. Shortly afterwards, Marco is diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor that causes him to lose control of his impulses. Increasingly violent, Marco is accused of sexually abusing Anna's daughter. His wife decides to grant his last wish by assisting him until his death.

Very beautiful, honest film about a difficult love in a remote mountain village. From the start you wonder what Anna sees in Marco. She is a cheerful, decisive woman, he is a silent, stiff guy. But yes, love cannot be explained.

Or is it? Because as the film progresses you start to sympathize more and more with that inscrutable man. Without giving any reason to do so, by the way. Some people are simply not instantly likable, you need a little more time for that.

The film is on the slow side, to say the least. Usually this pace is too slow for me, but in exceptional cases (I also think of Stalker (1979)) such a pace strengthens the film correct.

I also thought that choir worked well. Lyrically it always provided a poetic, cryptic look ahead or back, and it also worked as stepping stones. Some 'rest' - strangely enough, I needed that anyway.

Anna [Michèle Brand] and Marco [Simon Wisler] drive in their car through the Swiss mountains. Haddaway's “What is Love” can be heard on the radio. Nothing else happens at all. After about a minute Marco sings along to the chorus. The second verse follows and a minute later Marco also sings the second chorus. End scene. This insufferable misfire is full of completely pointless scenes like this for which there is no justification whatsoever. Anti-cinema at its very worst, especially since we soon discover that Marco has a malignant brain tumor. Three guesses how it ends. Skip even though it won the International Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. They have gone just as crazy there as in Cannes!

Some may find this an annoying film, but I thought this was a beautiful film that moved me enormously. No flashy actions or images, but for me just a wonderfully simple piece of captivating cinema....
