American missionaries have been trying to introduce Europeans to the new sport called basketball since the 1920s. The first European Basketball Championship is held in 1935. The national teams meet for the first time and they all want the honor of being the first champion. Meanwhile in Latvia, coach Baumanis is confident he can put together a team and bring it to the European Championship. On his journey, however, he soon learns that triumph and defeat are close together.
