Kimajimegakutai no Bonyarisenso plot
When it started and why they go to war, the soldiers don't know anymore. Dutifully - command is command - they march to the river every morning. Between 9:00 and 17:00 they shell the village on the other side from the bank, and have been doing so for decades. Well, this is my thing.
A mix of extreme dryness and everyday absurdism. It is not a popular combo and that is probably for a reason, because it is not that accessible. There is a lot of repetition, dry performances and tight framing. But I did laugh out loud several times.
The story (an old war that has fallen into routines) is certainly not new, but offers enough opportunities to make a nice film of it, and still to squeeze in a message. Not as crazy as his previous work, but Ikeda has his own style and I like that.
