Phase 4 of Marvel is now in full swing on Disney+ and the cinemas are finally starting to get a bit of steam with Black Widow and now with (the better) Shang-Shi as the second film.

Despite the completely different theme, especially the first 45 minutes you can feel that this is a typical Marvel movie. Lots of light-hearted action and lots of humor that is on point. Very entertaining and the fights are the best Marvel has ever offered so far. And at the same time, at times, a beautiful ode to "Wire fu" (think of Crouching Tiger, for example). The actors feel like a fish in water when it comes to their role and even Akwafina falls well within this universe. Not that I have anything against her, quite the contrary. But she is a certain type of actress that you can't just put anywhere.
In the second act, after about 45 minutes, the film collapses a bit. Something that is often a problem with superhero movies. The tempo drops completely and there is a lot of exposition. Ben Kingsley saves this part from total dullness.
Then the final battle in the third act gets going again and you can enjoy action and spectacle as far as Marvel is concerned. And yes, also a problem of many Marvel films (although Suicide Squad also suffered from this) is the lack of a real bad guy. and evil monster, that's all. Not very exciting, but "a Dance with Dragons " (pun intended) makes up for it somewhat.

Add to this a post credit scene that finally manages to arouse some interest and you have a great kick-off for phase 4. The ten rings turn out to be a beacon, but for what? Malicious or benign?.

Think Marvel now has a subscription to 3 or 3.5 star films.

3.5*

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings did not disappoint me in the least. There are a lot of mediocre and forgettable Marvel movies out there, anyway, and at least Shang-Chi feels like they want to try something different. Although 'different' can be taken with a grain of salt, because this film absolutely does not deviate from the well-known Marvel formula. Still, I liked the martial arts approach, and the second hour is definitely more imaginative and creative than most MCU movies. Although during that huge CGI festivity at the end I lost all kind of interest and attention. Throwing as many effects and action and monsters on the screen as possible is really not enough, you have to portray the action in an interesting and compelling way. The climax here is just soulless and boring, and that's what I feel, with a few exceptions, with just about every Marvel movie. No, I thought the first hour was much cooler. The choreography in the martial arts fight scenes is fine, and these scenes were presented with great energy and fluidity. For example, the scene on the bus is a highlight. Fortunately the characters are also quite successful; Simu Liu portrays a fine hero in the form of Shang-Chi, Awkwafina is a successful sidekick and Tony Chiu-Wai Leung portrays one of the more interesting villains in the franchise. A father vs son conflict is always cool in any case. The icing on the cake is the rather funny role of Ben Kingsley, which I think may return.

Small 3.5'.
