Blue Miracle is a film that follows one of the most frequently used plotlines in film history. A group of underdogs enters a competition that is far too ambitious, yet manages to amaze the entire world. Blue Miracle, then. A film full of sentiment, feel-good moments, against all odds, underdogs, triumph, and life lessons. A film that unfolds as expected, is sometimes a bit preachy, and (damn if it isn't true!) is based on truth.
As far as I am concerned, the film distinguishes itself from similar vehicles on one point. That is the subject of the competition. It involves fishing on the open sea. Specifically, for swordfish. And that makes for reasonably exciting footage. A man with a fishing rod having to reel in a huge, struggling swordfish is quite an exciting sight. The few scenes that actively focus on the fishing are depicted in an exhilarating way. It certainly stirred my suspense.
Naturally, the surrounding scenes are emotionally charged. If you prepare yourself for that, it’s not all that bad. If you prepare yourself for a film equipped with a very familiar dramatic structure, then it’s not all that bad. If you prepare yourself for a misanthropic and alcoholic skipper who, entirely according to the rules of the genre, thaws out and reveals himself to be a great human being, then while it may still not be extraordinary, it is bearable and simply solid feel-good fare.
Blue Miracle tells a hackneyed story lacking depth. The viewer gets exactly what he expects. The expectation is very skillfully fulfilled and enhanced with beautiful images of the sea and fish.

A Mexican boys' orphanage is on the verge of financial collapse.
