Nice. The cinematography is beautiful with an enchanting setting, although the long-tracking shots could have been even longer. The soundtrack relies on Debussy's *Clair de Lune*, first played on the piano within the film's narrative, later in an orchestral version, and anyone familiar with that music knows that it contributes very well to a fairytale atmosphere. And naturally, waltzes from Tchaikovsky's ballets also fit the setting well.

The plot was apparently inspired by the book Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates. The only Dutch thing left of that is the protagonist's skates, which are evidently Dutch. The plot is not very profound, but features occasional unexpected communist additions. It is fairly straightforward with an ending you see coming from miles away, but it is an enjoyable watch. The acting isn't great, but it isn't annoying either. 3.5*

3.5*.

A romantic fairy tale about a poor street urchin who enters into a relationship with a headstrong girl from upper-class circles. The story is by now more or less a classic and has been filmed numerous times in various versions. Nevertheless, the beautiful (winter) settings and cinematography make this a delightful viewing experience. Very nice.

I enjoy reading classic Russian novels featuring both the poor and the fabulously wealthy nobility. This film is set just a little later (around 1900, I believe), but it does capture that atmosphere. The first forty-five minutes, in particular, are very pleasant with all the beautiful sets. The storyline, however, is insignificant and gets worse and worse, mainly due to the flat acting and the lack of chemistry between the two lovers. As a result, the film eventually started to drag on, although the pacing was actually quite okay. 2.5*.
