Moderate.

I get the feeling that when horror directors want to prove themselves quickly, it always has to be through a slow, alienating film. Now Keating is not exactly the least experienced horror director, but after 6 films I would think he could create a bit more flow. There is not much of that in Offseason.

Despite a lot of alienating stylistic exercises, Offseason is still a pretentious film that can't do much more than look good every now and then. More painful to see that it manages to drag in a reasonably good cast. No one is really used to their full potential. Donahue can be called substandard, I've already forgotten Swanberg and Brake is mainly discarded.

What remains is a film that focuses very much on dialogue. The problem is that every sentence is spoken at a very slow pace. Every conversation feels strange, not even in the context of the film, it is just strange in the whole. I don't really understand what the problem is between the characters, but it always seems like they all don't want to be there and say the sentences reluctantly.

I can still give it points because of the fairly mysterious premise in combination with some nice visual style points, but I don't have much more to say about it. This film is one that lacks flow and pace in almost every respect. That may be intentional, but it ensures that the film can't achieve anything more than being retarded. I can't do much with it, so the rating is accordingly.
