Alice [Florence Pugh] and Jack [Harry Styles] are the new residents of a dream home located in a picturesque desert village that is part of the mysterious Victory project founded by the charismatic Frank [Chris Pine] with Dr. Collins [Timothy Simons]. When neighbor Margaret [Kiki Layne] comes out shortly after she publicly criticizes the Victory project, Alice begins to suspect that things are not going well. Gosh, would it? Although Katie Silberman's screenplay provides a plausible explanation for why it takes so long for Alice to realize this, the viewer finds it difficult to get through the first duration. Good acting by Pugh, Styles and Wilde (as neighbor Bunny), but Wilde's direction is heavy handed and distracts too much and too often from the story. And the story turns out to be thin, predictable and a bit silly.

At the end of the film is a piece of action (the chase) that is just excellent, exciting and well-arranged. So much so I think, let her shoot a good action movie instead of all kinds of self-proclaimed failed action directors (yes Michael Bay, I'm looking at you too).

That part doesn't really fit with the rest of the film, but I had a great time with it. Because if the film seems to go out a bit like a candle, there is still some energy in the film. Good, because I thought this was a pretty good movie. Of course you know as a viewer that something is going on (you don't know what exactly, although I was fairly close) and you especially want to know that, but I thought it was a nicely shot film anyway. Both the sets and costumes as well as enough nice visual ideas. The film occasionally drags a bit (I didn't call it night candle for nothing) and especially Harry Styles is colorless and if he really has to act then things go wrong. Anyway, he's next to Pugh, one of the finest actresses in recent years anyway and she really excels here. I can endlessly look at her face what is happening there without much happening. She really puts down an intense compassionate role, every moment also believable. 3.5*.
