"Rewrite the reality."
Kongwen Lu is the author of a fantasy book series starring a heroic teenager, also named Kongwen. This one is on a quest to overthrow a tyrant's rule. However, this fantasy world has an influence on reality. Because of this, a man is ordered to kill the author.

Fantasy as fantasy should be.
As a viewer you can discover the world (actually two) of A Writer's Odyssey with the main character. There are of course well-known fantasy elements, but because it is a new franchise, there are no rules. It therefore feels really imaginative and exciting, whereas with most Western fantasy you are immediately familiar with the rules of the world into which you are thrown.
It is also nice that China can now really put its foot in Hollywood. Visually it is really nice. The CG is more than decent and coupled with the Chinese aesthetic it delivers some great scenes, the highlight undoubtedly being the parade (very reminiscent of Innocence). But throughout the film there are scenes that stand out.
The story is also nice, although the film still clearly wants to be a blockbuster. The end is therefore finishing more narratives (+ a setup for a sequel). Soundtrack and acting performances don't really stand out either, but I'm glad to have seen a really cool, expensive fantasy film again. Please more of this.

Messy story in which the fantasy world of a story in preparation and the reality of a child abduction run parallel to each other. That gives a double story that I found difficult to link together. The CG fantasy world actually remains a given that takes place "in the head" and the story in our reality feels like sheer nonsense... someone who is afraid of being written ] ??...
In addition, I certainly found the CG animation worthwhile, but the images often look terribly fake, which made me feel like I was watching an Xbox game. Not always nice.
For me a film that easily looks away thanks to the imposing images, but I was still left with a disappointed feeling and open questions at the end. Small 3*

Fairly muddled story in the first part where it is difficult to connect the links between reality and fantasy. Also in terms of action and images, the film did not immediately raise interest. In the second part, the story becomes a bit clearer and you get a better grip on the different events that take place in both fantasy and reality. It also gets better in terms of action, especially towards the end with the very clever imaginative retaliation that is extensively brought to the viewer. You forget the characters very quickly, but not the fantasy creatures. 6.5/10
