An almost classic melodrama about a "guttersnipe" with a heart of gold trying to escape the grip of her past, but the latter is easier said than done when that past is embodied by Lon Chaney at his most unpleasant. Not much new under the sun and predictability reigns supreme, but the casting and performances are "full-blooded" without ever going too over the top, with Priscilla Dean fairly restrained as the central character, Spottiswoode Aitken as pawnbroker and fence (and for those wondering which Dickens villain he resembles: his character is named Fadem), Kalla Pasha as the enormous bartender, and, as the biggest surprise, Wellington Player as the friendly giant who is unfazed by the loss of his fortune and thereby melts Priscilla Dean's heart. In this company, Chaney effectively plays only third fiddle, but even as an ensemble film with an occasional nice, gritty atmosphere, it is still worth watching.
