The film feels like a short story, in which a single idea is expressed in an 'unbelievable' because magical-realistic form (so a single strange event is told), and this relatively short film is actually relatively long for that. Which idea is expressed symbolically is probably open to multiple interpretations but I take it as that the bond between mother and daughter is so strong that she would want to transcend those separated generations (or generation gap) and/or that in this case both mother and daughter are so close to each other that they could have been each other's best friends or twins if they had been the same age. Of course it could all just be a fantasy of the daughter who is a child after all, now that her mother herself is brought back to her childhood by means of memories in her parental home so that in the imagination she can easily appear as a child when she leaves as an adult (like the mother saw a panther on the wall in her bed as a child).

The idea could have been further or more deeply developed in a longer film, but as a short film it is a nice interlude.

“Cute” is the first word that came to mind after watching this charming film, in which a little girl fills in the gap left by her mother’s sudden absence in an imaginative way. Endearingly acted by the Sanz twins. One of Céline Sciamma’s better films.

A film with a child in the lead role is not always easy to make. But Céline Sciamma has succeeded. The story of a young girl who loses her grandmother. While her mother is grieving over the death of her mother, it is up to little Nelly to deal with that loss herself and also her sad mother. She literally meets the youth of her mother where she lived as a child.

The film seems small and simple. Both in terms of decor and length (barely 72 minutes). But the film is enormously layered with a few wise statements from the characters that never sound didactic, but that hopefully take you along as a viewer. The warm autumn colours provide a comforting blanket. It is the creativity of an intimate short film, but fortunately long enough to take the time for atmosphere and emotions. Wonderful film!
