How human can a machine be. That question is not asked in a sci-fi movie, but in an everyday romantic comedy set in Berlin, where the lone cool scientist Alma is joined by the romantic Tom at home.

Tom is a robot in training, you could say. A robot that has yet to calibrate its algorithms. That fact makes for some funny scenes. Around it unfolds the well-known dramaturgy that belongs to a romantic comedy. The only difference is that the film is about a human's relationship with a robot. Other than that, there isn't much that is exciting about the film. Visually, the film can even be called quite boring.

Alma is played by Maren Eggert. Great role. It is nice to accompany her as a dried out scientist in search of more self-knowledge. Dan Stevens does a nice job as Tom. A boyish appearance that, with some angular movements and angular speech, makes it clear that he is not human.

The story is not very special. The usual setbacks on the road to love. The usual doubts, disappointments and agitations. I think there could have been a little more there. I would have appreciated a little more personal background and a scientific sidetrack. A few special effects to spice up the story wouldn't have gone amiss either.

Ich Bin Dein Mensch is an average rom-com with an unusual couple. And no more.

Excellent film in which a woman lives with a robot for a few weeks as a way of experimenting. A fact that could easily have resulted in a flat film, but this film is certainly not. The interaction between humans and robots is interestingly elaborated here, with some excellent dialogues about humanity. Subtly funny, not least because of the perfect portrayal of Dan Stevens as the robot with a human appearance.

There are several movies in this genre. Comes close to what was also released this year After Yang (Film, 2022) where robots come eerily close to humans and where the distinction can hardly be made. It is a film that raises the debate as to how far humans can go to develop AI that approaches perfection. Perhaps less of a problem for good causes, but what if they are used for crime or military purposes?

Although it suddenly turns too easy past the halfway mark - because that it would turn around is obvious in these kinds of films - I found Alma's line of thought quite intriguing. She also mentioned that she felt like she was talking to herself. There is no "we" in this story, just an "I". And robots supporting the field is one thing, starting a relationship with them is another. Because these models are merely an improved version of the classic glorified sex doll. In that respect, Kûki Ningyô (Film, 2009) by Kore-eda is recommended.

A film that is quite layered with indeed good dialogues and a touch of humor. Also the theme "What makes me happy" or the theme "loneliness" comes to the fore in this film. Great role by Dan Stevens by the way. Nice!
