Munich is a good movie. Actors play well. Dressing is neat. Story is good and the soundtrack is also quite decent. But nowhere does it get big. Nowhere do you feel the tension that must have prevailed at the time. Then what is the point? When the film is set in Munich, I never get the feeling that the film is actually set in Germany. And with the few intense scenes that there are, the soundtrack only moderately supports in my opinion. I had high expectations for this film, partly due to the extremely positive reviews that trickled through in various media. In that respect, the Munich was a disappointment. Remains an entertaining espionage film set in a fascinating era.

I do like political-diplomatic films, especially when they are about the First or Second World War, a theme about which I can speak a little bit. Interesting developments, therefore, that are cited in this film, which examines the Munich Agreement and whether the issue of the Sudetenland and its circumstances. It is mainly the context that makes the whole thing so fascinating. What should Britain and any other nations do? You also have a similar dilemma with Ukraine today, but then there was no EU or NATO…

Of course there are things that have nothing to do with history, just to add to the film, but that in itself didn't bother us. Great role by the way from McKay and Irons. Chamberlain fought for peace and put his faith in the pact, only things turned out differently and he looked like a schmuck. Well, the same thing happened to Stalin for a few years. Putting your trust in a madman is usually not a good idea…

The atmosphere was good and the pace was also sufficient to guide you through the film. We now know that Hitler survived all his plots and attacks, but I thought those were pretty strong scenes because of Schwochow's excellent approach.

The stuffy feeling when watching this film was not so much due to the coincidence that I watched the film exactly 84 years after the Munich conference. In this film we follow the negotiations around the leader of a powerful country that wants to conquer a small region militarily, because of the historical ties that his people would have with it. He wants to convince his fellow presidents and rulers from the rest of Europe that this will not be the case. No other military conquests will follow. After all, they're not going to throw themselves into a world war for a small dispute in a faraway land, are they?

If you understand the historical parallel to today, watch this film and learn the lessons from the scrap of paper Neville Chamberlain (wonderfully played by Jeremy Irons) is waving triumphantly at. If not, open today's newspaper first and then watch this movie. Some history lessons are too important to pass up. Especially today. 3.5*
