Les Sorcières de l’Orient plot
They were dubbed "Witches of the East," the Japanese volleyball players who won gold at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. They started as a volleyball team at a textile factory, after which victory followed victory. The team was so popular that it spawned a boom of mangas, cartoons, and anime. Julien Faraut's documentary interweaves manga and anime with archive footage of blood-curdling matches and extremely rigorous training sessions, propelled by a rhythmic montage and music by the French musician K-Raw. When the women, now in their seventies, come together again after many years, they are playfully introduced as heroines in a sixties spy film.
