It is original, but also exciting, and a film that is difficult to predict.
I don't want to miss a film by Wan and was hoping a few years ago that he would direct the third Conjuring film. So no, the man was actually brooding on something else. Malignant I found a bit less scary than Conjuring, not as raw as Saw, but it is a more brutal film with gory kills and action. Indeed, also quite a few genres, as rep_robert said : serial killer film, supernatural thriller, horror, stylized action ... In fact, Malignant puts the most energy in the whodunnit ... not so much on the identity of the killer (you already know soon that his name is Gabriel) but rather to the nature of it. And indeed, this is a very special baddie, fairly unseen.

Visually I see the most elements of Japanese commercial horror in this and of course Wan's own style from Conjuring, certainly in the first half. The ending leaves a tiny loophole to franchise land, but that can only be disappointing; hopefully no sequel. I also think it's a good ending for a one-shot. As a downside, I found the acting to be below average across the board; not that I'm waiting for great things in a horror movie, but there has to be at least one character that appeals. There wasn't; the trickery was more important. I have maintained my confidence in Wan.

PS : I was all alone in the Kinepolis cinema... never seen before.

Oh how wonderful, finally something different!

What a great movie from James Wan. Something completely different from what we were used to from him, although the tension, the setting and camera work were typical Wan I thought. The film starts mysteriously and exciting and from time to time you also saw scenes with gore. The actors played really well. I didn't see the plot twist coming. I had previously expected that it would eventually be her (on her own), but I thought this elaboration was genius. Something different for once and that's okay too. I see a sequel to this by the way, don't you? I can!

3.5 stars!
