L'Arroseur Arrosé plot

A gardener is watering his plants when a mischievous boy sneaks behind his back and sets foot on the water hose. The gardener is surprised and looks into the nozzle to find out why the water doesn't come anymore. The boy lifts his foot off the garden hose, causing the water to spray into the gardener's face. The gardener chases after the boy, after which the boy runs away and the gardener continues to water.

Another part of the series from December 1895 and immediately the nicest I've seen from Lumière so far. No snapshot this time, but a staged piece of slapstick. A gardener whose garden hose is sabotaged by a bad boy with all the consequences that entails. Not good cinematically (part of the chase takes place off-camera), but it could well be the birth of on-screen comedy. Apparently also the first film to receive a one-sheet poster (for a single film). It's still very nice that things like this have been preserved.

3.5*

Well what can I say about this? Reading three lines and reading the review takes more time than watching the movie. Well, the film is very effective and purposeful, nothing more and nothing less. But also very short and the joke feels a bit stale. 2.5*.

Well, what can be said about this? Original classic of a joke shot on camera in a fragment of no more than half a minute. Silent and shocking images, static camera. It's all not too much, but certainly perhaps a milestone in the history of the film. Many more of these slapstick films will follow afterwards.
