Excitingly constructed but ultimately rather vague and unstable horror film. The emphasis is too much on the interaction between the uninteresting characters, which makes the threat in the forest around them come off badly. In the wonderfully psychedelic finale, things briefly come to life, but before you know it the film is abruptly over and you are staring at the credits with a shrug.

Remains a somewhat difficult director that Wheatley, with an oeuvre that is rather all over the place. In any case, this is a bit more like his earlier work such as Kill List and Field in England, which is largely positive. Separate film that manages to maintain its mystery throughout the entire duration, puts together atmospherically and still gives a nice twist to the eco-horror event. Reminds me of Finnegan's Without Name.

Still, it doesn't all work. The more abstract moments in particular are a bit off. The intention behind it is clear, but to really impress it could have been a bit more gas. Actually, I don't even have much to criticize about the film, except that it is just a bit too well-behaved and reserved in all areas for what it tries to be. But at least it's a lot more fascinating than Wheatley's last few films, well over 3* for now.
