Une Vie Démente plot

Alex and Noémie are in their thirties and want a child. But their plans are turned upside down when Alex's mother, Suzanne, starts doing crazy things. That's because she has contracted semantic dementia, a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects her behavior. She spends a lot of money, visits her neighbors at night for sandwiches and makes herself a fake driver's license with glue and scissors. Suzanne the mother turns into Suzanne the unruly child. Re-educating her for Noémie and Alex is a daunting task.

Heartbreaking portrait of a young couple looking to expand their family, but first having to provide care and shelter to the mother, then to their first child. Tragicomic approach in which the sexual activities in bed were discussed embarrassingly openly because it apparently did not go so easily through natural means.

Afterwards, the emphasis shifts more to the mother, who increasingly (literally) claims the leading role with her strange behavior. Later it turns out that there is a case of semantic dementia. I found the interesting starting point of the film to be Noémi's decision to continue to have children herself, despite all the worries and problems with her mother-in-law. It is not because life around you has difficulties that you should put your own happiness aside and wait for "better" times.

Emotions run high, from frustration to helplessness. Heavy theme that is also told with the necessary witticisms. Intense and moving. Great film!

It was quite daring to give a film about dementia a lighter touch, especially at first, when one had to smile at the mother's antics despite the drama that was unfolding.

Things are gradually becoming more serious and there is rightly a lot of attention for the untenable position in which the relatives find themselves.

The ending has a surprising touch. Acceptance and adaptation and also happiness seem to gain the upper hand...Still a bit strange.

Jo Deseure is strong in her role.

Alex [Jean Le Peltier] and Noëmie [Lucie Debay] want to start a family. While waiting for their own apartment, they live with Alex's somewhat pushy mother Suzanne [Jo Deseure], who is behaving increasingly erratically. When it turns out that Suzanne suffers from a special form of dementia, Alex and Noémie find a lifeline after an intensive search in the form of nurse Kevin [Gilles Remiche]. Now they have to decide what place Suzanne will take in their future lives. A cheap-looking production, but the unsentimental approach to the subject is refreshing. Made in close collaboration with the actors and that pays off in excellent acting, especially by Deseure.
