Disappointment. The film starts strong, especially when the camera focuses on Zendaya and you slowly see her mix of boredom and annoyance as Washington gets busy. As a viewer, I also had that annoyance. Washington is a somewhat colorless actor (we already saw in Tenet) who now mainly tries to make a lot of noise and thus give some presence. But it is mainly overacting, theater work. Given the single location, you would almost think this is an original play, but not so. No more than Zendaya, who says a thousand times more with her looks than all Washington's banter put together. Although I didn't think she ever had the appearance of an ex-junkie.

The script is also weak. The arguments, tirades, monologues (it's hard to call it dialogue) seem more intended to say something to the viewer than to fit into the film. They are still quite made. They are not really believable for a moment in the film and often the actors (especially Washington) talk to nothing, as if they are separate from the other actor. You can see it as a symbol of the separation in their relationship, but then I would be giving too much credit.

Visually very beautiful, with lots of high-contrast black and white, strong framing, nice play with light and dark and occasionally nice camera angles. Some individual scenes still work. And some really interesting things are said. But 100 minutes of John David Washington is really too much. 2.5*.

It's as if Malcolm and Marie are on a treadmill, taking turns to keep pace with each other. It's still fun at first, but gradually it gets worn out, making the monologues gradually become annoying.

That does not detract from the fact that Zendaya and Washington deliver solid performances despite the rather monotonous script. I understand this is a quickie from Sam Levinson and it shows.

A film with only 2 actors in a cross between Marriage Story and a classic Woody Allen film. Although it does lack the necessary cynicism. The story is about a couple who come home after a film premiere and things are said in their relationship that cause a chain reaction. The result is a film with dialogues that are unfortunately not always well developed. In terms of text anyway, because both actors do quite well.

The film doesn't have much to offer and doesn't really hit anything with the rather meager dialogue. But because of the acting and the stylish decoration, it's not bad either. Too bad, because Zendaya in particular shows that she can do more than the teenage roles of the past. With better writing and depth, this would certainly have been the film that would have shaken off her image as a teenage actress.
