The Play House plot
A man comes to a theater and buys a ticket. The conductor, all the musicians and everyone in the audience are the same person as himself. Then he wakes up from his dream and turns out to be a simple helper in the theater where he works. He has to do all kinds of different chores which leads to a lot of chaos.

Buster Keaton in many guises, also as a woman and something hillary extras.
Tempo-packed succession of surprising, funny gags. Twenty minutes away with Buster.
And if you don't know what a punch clock is or how to tell twins apart, watch "The Play Hoiuse"

Now that the Buster Keaton shorts are on MovieMeter, it's time to check them all out again and where better to start than with The Playhouse? My favorite Keaton short and that's mainly because of a great first part where he really plays every role. A real cinematic feat and oh so impressive to realize that this is already almost 100 years old. Fortunately, Keaton (and Edward F. Cline) realize that they need more than just that gimmick to keep the short interesting and then decide to take a different tack. In terms of stunt work, things are still fairly quiet for Keaton (he was still recovering from a broken ankle) but there is still a lot to experience. For example, Keaton takes the concept of "punch clock" a bit too literally, ending up in a classic door comedy and becoming part of a kind of acrobat show. Delicious!

The occasional slapstick with Buster Keaton is acceptable now and then. Very nice part in the beginning where every character is shaped. Great gimmicks. But also later it remains fun with the traditional chase scene and the door closed and door open humor. I also liked the performance as a monkey. A Keaton rarely disappoints, including this one. Nice!
