"It was an accident."
When Jay and Rebecca's daughter Kayla confesses to impulsively murdering her best friend, the two desperate parents try to cover up the horrific crime and protect their daughter. As a result, they end up in a complicated web of lies and deceit.

An entertaining but ultimately unremarkable and, above all, implausible thriller produced by Jason Blum, whose Blumhouse production company has been working overtime in recent years. No horror this time, however. After a messy start, the plot actually becomes quite suspenseful, although the film suffers from a lack of interesting characters and builds towards a rather ridiculous ending. And with Joey King, they have brought in a very irritating lead actress.

A decent movie that relies mainly on its mysterious atmosphere. It was an easy watch, but don't expect a masterpiece. I didn't see the ending coming and found it very surprising.

A lackluster affair. An entire film in which characters have to cope with a tragic situation and get themselves deeper and deeper into trouble. The lack of understanding is palpable at times, though on the other hand, director Veena Sud does build up an interesting dilemma regarding how one would handle this oneself. Joey King and Mireille Enos, however, act poorly, although Peter Sarsgaard does a good job. The snowy setting is otherwise quite striking, although the filmmakers do little with it in terms of atmosphere. The Lie ends strongly, but the build-up is too bland and uninteresting to support that. It is all rather unmemorable, actually very typical of a thriller at this level.
