Son a film with a lightning start that really gets you into the mood. The further towards the end the less of that mood remains. It seems as if the inspiration seems to decrease by the minute. Too bad it should have stayed on the drawing board a bit longer.

Irish director Kavanagh already touched me a few years ago with his homeland The Canal. Now he comes with Son, in which he went looking for it in America. And with Son he actually does exactly the same as The Canal; constantly putting the viewer on the wrong track.

Emilie Hirsch plays a mother of a child she initially doesn't want. Eight years later, she is still quite happy with her son and together they form a close family couple. Where is father? You can guess. One night, fate seems to strike and the sect she fled seems to have it in for her again. She goes to the police and one of the officers believes her immediately. You would almost think that it is going to be predictable; that the officer could also be part of this sect. Gradually, more and more strange things start happening around her house... and later also with her son.

And here the film suddenly seems to turn around. Was it a cult at first? Is it really a curse that her son is infected with... and has transformed the boy into a figure who needs human flesh every now and then to survive... And a mother who continues to love her son very much also helps him with this. I'm clearing metaphors. And no... Then it seems to be something else again.

And at the end, all the puzzles, more or less, fall into place.

I could certainly charm myself with Son. Dark atmosphere, you feel the constant threat but you are also misled. Kavanagh has done it again.

And yet another contribution to that immensely large pile of mediocre horror films. The story could have been interesting, but cinematic television film level, pace all much too calm and along the way we touch at least two genre classics and then mixed with some single-parent family drama and some romance with the policeman who investigates the whole thing. The type of horror film you can put on if you suffer from insomnia, big chance that you will fall asleep with this.
