Although Hannah Goslar [Josephine Arendsen] insists that Anne Frank [Aiko Beemsterboer] is her best friend, you wonder why. Anne comes across as a selfish, manipulative bitch who doesn't shy away from ignoring her 'best friend' when it suits her better and pretends nothing happened the next day. The story jumps back and forth between the Bergen Belsen exchange camp, in which Hannah finds herself from the end of 1944 and where the conditions are significantly less harrowing than in the part where Anne and Margot were at the time, and Amsterdam during the occupation, where the teenage friends with a remarkable and little believable naivety hopping around. A more mature approach to the subject would have been appropriate here, but Sombogaart has so nurserydized the story that it hardly makes an impression. Only Roeland Fernhout earns a big pass as Hannah's father.

A bit childish indeed, but it also feels amateurish. Like I'm watching a light version of the story by the local drama society. Especially those two girls don't convince (and their entire friendship doesn't really convince either), but also the feeling of tension and fear really doesn't surface anywhere in the film. So this remains a somewhat tame film that could have been more. 2.0*.

Unfortunately, this movie is not worth watching. It lacks emotion and a soul. In addition, many things are not correct. The taunting of Anne Frank, the big mouth against the Germans. Anne and Hannah's way of doing things. It could all have been much better and more serious. It's hard for me to imagine that this is the image of WW2 that the director had in mind.
