A grim coming-of-age film with a gloomy story about the interaction between nasty characters in a sinister, bleak environment. Gloomy.

The Winter Lake caught my interest because of Emma Mackey. She made her breakthrough in the series Sex Education (Series, 2019 - 2023) and was also excellent in Emily (Film, 2022).

Unfortunately, her acting debut The Winter Lake is a lot less captivating. That's not Mackey's fault, by the way. She clearly tries her best to make something of her role, but unfortunately nothing in this film is well-developed.

Positive are the beautiful images of Ireland and the beautiful build-up of an oppressive atmosphere. In the last 25 minutes or so, however, the film goes downhill fast. The heaviness and pretension that the first part of the film has is expertly helped to ruin by working towards a meaningless climax, which means that the film will eventually be quickly forgotten.

As a viewer you are left with a lot of questions. The film promises a lot but is ultimately not much more than an empty vessel.

In the end, this film feels like a missed opportunity. Still, I give a very small pass for Emma Mackey's acting and the beautiful landscape images of the Irish countryside.

For those who want to give this movie a chance. It's on You Tube.
