With a belated message of how harsh and unfair life can be, Raoul Servais crafted this Cannes-award-winning short film, a combination of animation and living characters.
Stylistically beautiful with clean lines and contrasts. Imaginative, captivating, cleverly rendered, and despite the somewhat uninspiring nature of the action, there's plenty of lightheartedness to the action.

This Harpya is a piece of Belgian film history. It won an award at Cannes, and I wanted to see it after reading a newspaper article that recently appeared.

A bizarre and probably shocking film at the time that captures the essence of the film. No detours, just straight to the point with a touch of cruelty and a touch of humor. A lovely atmosphere with that Belle Époque style of the male. Dominance, nature, and survival of the fittest condensed into just under ten minutes. The woman as ruler, why not?

Technically quite enjoyable to follow as well. Dark and stylistically, very successful with minimal resources.

In the 1980s, Belgians began experimenting with music in a country where support, recognition, resources, and audiences were scarce. While music often succeeded, film adaptations were less common. Where there was any appreciation, it was adapted from theater or literature. Harpya is a somewhat welcome exception, though the final result still feels too much like a dated experiment. I do like it better than his short film Pegasus, though. Harpya is more of an update of the short films from around the turn of the last century.
