Fifteen-year-old Cole moves in with his estranged father Harp in north Philadelphia. He discovers the lively cowboy culture of the city that has been there for a century. The subculture offers a safe place for local residents who often live in poverty and regularly come into contact with violence.

More a tribute to the togetherness of a black community in a Philadelphia suburb than a feature film. The acting and camera work are perfectly fine, but the surprising story in itself (who would expect black cowboys in a city of millions?) Doesn't really mean much. You do have a good feeling about it.

Boring.
Dull, weekday drama starring the popular Idris Elba, an actor I find less and less the more I see films of him. Not that it is his big fault that I don't like this film: there is actually little interesting to see. As a result, Concrete Cowboy doesn't even reach the usual Netflix middle bracket for me - which usually yields a 2.5 to 3.

After Cole [Caleb McLaughlin] is kicked out of his school in Detroit after yet another incident, his desperate mother [Liz Priestley] decides he should spend the summer with his father Harp [Idris Elba] in Philadelphia. Harp and his friends live in a slum like cowboys, with horses, stables and nightly gatherings around a campfire. Unwilling to make his contribution, Cole finds a possible way out through Smush [Jharrell Jerome], an old friend, who seduces him with the promise of easy money. The setting is interesting and the acting is solid, but the screenplay is too emphatically reminiscent of the all-round superior Moonlight. And to The Karate Kid. Dedicated to Eric E.
