The Music Box plot

"Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy decided to reorganize and resupervise their entire financial structure- so they took the $3.80 and went into business."

Laurel & Hardy are movers who have to deliver a player piano to a house on top of a hill. Apparently the only way to get to this house is by stairs. The two try to drag the player piano up the stairs, failing several times. They are hindered by a nanny with a pram, a police officer and a certain Professor von Schwarzenhoffen, who hates player pianos. When they arrive at the top, however, a few unpleasant surprises await them.

In my opinion one of the best Laurel and Hardy films, and in my opinion also a classic.

I completely agree that with a significantly longer running time the film would probably

would have been less. The story simply does not lend itself to that. First the messing around on

the high staircase to the destination and then the destructive fumbling at the destination.

That's all we can do, but it's done magnificently with Stan and Ollie at their best.

"The" classic among the Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy short films.

One in which Ollie takes more than his fair share of beatings.

It is pure madness of course, but the two still manage to make everyone laugh through their unparalleled way of presenting it all and there is also some finesse in it in the end (the scenes with the bowler hats, the dancing party, the ignoring of the easy detour in which their facial expressions are also their calling card).

In a Greek myth, Sisyphus has to roll a stone up a mountain, which then rolls back down again and again. When Laurel and Hardy are faced with a similar task, they keep their spirits up. The staircase, with over one hundred and thirty steps and several landings, can still be visited in Los Angeles.

The postman could have saved them a lot of trouble with a little extra explanation. The woman with the pram is reminiscent of Pantserkruiser Potemkin (1925). Billy Gilbert plays the self-satisfied hothead with the mainly Austrian accent. In the presence of his wife he completely changes character. They could avoid a lot of problems by thinking first and then acting, but that would be less fun. An example of Stan's persistent foolishness is when he throws the wrong hat down twice.

Pianolas were popular in the first quarter of the twentieth century; they were then replaced by radio and gramophone. The sound is often wrong. For example, you hear clusters of keys being pressed by hand, and a few times you hear tubular bells instead of piano strings. The ragtime on which they perform that delightful dance is played by Marvin Hatley - known for the cuckoo tune. Thanks to the high rhythm, the absurdity and the smooth alternation between visual and verbal humor, this short remains funny forever.
