"The house finds you"

Theo Conroy is a successful middle-aged man whose marriage to his much younger wife Susanna, an actress, is not going well because of her secrecy, his jealousy and the shadow of his past. In an effort to mend their relationship, Theo and Susanna book a vacation to a secluded modern home in rural Wales for themselves and their six-year-old daughter, Ella. What at first seems like a perfect retreat turns into a nightmare when Theo threatens to lose his grip on reality.

Cross-section

Koepp is back where he started as a director. I was really looking forward to this one too. A great cast, a skilled director, and a hit-and-miss production company.

Unfortunately, no one seems to really want to put their best foot forward with this production. The buildup is a bit long and gives away a bit too quickly what this film is all about. Once inside the house, you, as a viewer, desperately want to get caught up in the mystery, but Koepp never manages to visually and narratively draw you into the story. The film is too full of waking up from nightmares and continues loop clichés. The fact that the house is more modern is a nice change from the old castle cliché, but it never really manages to do anything with the location. It doesn't go beyond a few doors that lead to a cellar or even more doors. The drama is also a bit weak. The relationship that suddenly ends. It feels like a fleeting plot point to leave Bacon alone in the house with his daughter. Also, there are those village idiots who stand by your car and tell you vague things that our protagonist completely ignores. It's just a little too full of genre clichés and Koepp doesn't come up with anything to make the film forgivable.

The conclusion is obvious to even the most seasoned viewer, but it wouldn't have been so bad if the film had been filmed with a bit more style and grit. Koepp and the cast are taking things too easy.

2 stars.

An effective, subtle horror film with an excellent performance by Kevin Bacon. More of a mysterious thriller than a true horror film, but the film certainly has plenty of scary moments and the atmosphere is delightfully creepy. Stir of Echoes was a better collaboration between director David Koepp and Bacon, but I still found this a pleasant surprise.

Theo [Kevin Bacon] is a former banker whose previous marriage ended tragically, and his current wife, the much younger Susanne [Amanda Seyfried], is an aspiring actress who will be starting work on a film in England in a few weeks. Theo [Kevin Bacon] and Susanne [Amanda Seyfried] decide to spend their holiday with their daughter Ella [Avery Tiiu Essex] in a remote house in Wales. Theo soon begins to suspect that something is strange about the house, and he is also plagued by nightmares about his past. A low-budget haunted house film with a strong cast and some ominous moments, but it never really gets scary. Not bad, but it doesn't quite live up to its promise.
