Years and Years is about the near future where the problems we know now come to a boil and the world slides ever closer to the abyss. We follow the Lyons family, a family populated by different backgrounds and therefore each symbolizes a different part of society. Grandma Muriel Deacon (Anne Reid) is the mater-familias and represents the older guard with old-fashioned family values despite being open minded. Edith Lyons (Jessica Hynes) is a political activist and represents the protesters and skeptics of the system. Stephen Lyons (Rory Kinnear) is the successful of the bunch. He is a financial advisor and earns capital. He is married to Celeste (T'Nia Miller) who is an accountant and together they form a materialistic yuppie couple that represents the upper class. Their daughters are privileged modern day kids. The eldest Bethany (Lydia West) is Transhuman and would prefer to continue living digitally, she represents the social media generation. Daniel Lyons (Russell Tovey) is a housing officer who evicts illegal immigrants, but at the same time he is also a homosexual who has a relationship with Viktor (Maxim Baldrey), an illegal immigrant who has fled Ukraine because of his sexuality. He is therefore literally the official who dangles between rules and feeling. Then there's Rosie Lyons (Ruth Madeley), a single mother who is in a wheelchair. She and her kids represent the underclass who are mainly dependent on the system and others. Then there's a controversial businesswoman named Vivienne Rooks (Emma Thompson) who has emerged as a populist politician. Years and Years shows a grim but realistic picture of the future. How fast the decay of this world can go when the wrong people are in power and how powerless we as simple yalls are then. At the mercy of the gods. Only the Bethany part was perhaps still somewhat unrealistic.

A bit of 'Black Mirror' and a lot of British generational dramas in which different characters embody political and social positions. From the tantalizing premise that the series takes place in a very near future, in which populism reigns supreme while the United States and Europe no longer have a role in post-Brexit England. So wonderfully excessively personified by Vivienne Rook (Emma Thompson) as the Trumpian politician eagerly displaying her own ignorance and yet beating the established institutions for piggybacking on a growing sense of cynicism and resentment. Yet the focus in 'Years and Years' (2019) is on how the members of the Lyons family deal with their economic slump and how new technological developments affect their lives. Especially the storyline about the refugee problem hits hard because the homosexual love affair between Daniel/Victor outlines the personal drama of inhumane policy. Somehow it's a pain that the series paints a hyper-realistic picture of the times in which we live on the one hand, while on the other it gets ahead of things with a far-fetched subplot about transhumanism.
